How Seniors are Winning with Home Care
Patients and families benefit from home care
More seniors are taking advantage of home health care, and why not? It’s hard to see a downside when older adults are given easier access to medical care, and doctors get a break from the fluorescent lighting of their office.
Home Visits
Today’s medical technology is portable, making it easier for physicians to make home visits. There are many practices that can deploy phlebotomists to patient’s homes to draw blood, and send results electronically. Imaging technicians can perform ultrasounds or x-rays as well. By performing these tests from the patients home doctors can eliminate fear and other factors that deter people from getting the exams they need to prevent and treat disease.
According to Dr. Alan Kronhaus, co-founder and CEO of Doctors Making Housecalls, many clinical advantages come from house visits including the ability to manage medications more effectively when the doctor can see exactly what’s inside the medicine cabinet. It also provides the doctor with the ability to address diet concerns, “You can look into the refrigerator and see how it’s stocked – if you’ve got a diabetic patient who has banana cream pie,” says Kronhaus. “We look for things like steep steps without carpeting, area rugs without nonskid padding underneath, electrical cords that could represent a tripping hazard, poor lighting,” he added.
Patients do pay a premium for house visits, often in the form of travel fees. Kronhaus’ company charges $95 per visit. According to Kronhaus patients save in other ways including paid time off of work taken by family members, round-trip costs of a wheelchair-enabled van or ambulance fees.
Struggles
While home health agencies make healthcare accessible to many immobile patients, many are struggling to stay in business. “Home health agencies fill a gaping need, but with economic and reimbursement pressures, many are struggling to survive,” Jane Kelly, executive director of the Kansas Home Care Association, a nonprofit trade organization told U.S. News.
Many home health care agencies find it difficult to get insurance coverage. If a patient isn’t housebound these services may not be covered, even though getting to a hospital many be physically challenging. Once a patient shows minor improvement, they may no longer qualify for home visits, even though these visits can prevent costly hospital readmissions and help patients avoid long-term hospital stays.
Studies show
According to a recent study, when medical practitioners make home visits to make a thorough geriatric assessment, everyone wins. Benefits include:
· Reduced spend on hospital admission rates
· Patients are less likely to enter long-term care facilities
· Patients receive more follow-up care
· Patients have a better chance of aging in their home
· Comprehensive home assessments help uncover important health clues
“When [patients] go to a physician they have maybe 10 minutes’ face time so what often happens is the conversation focuses on what is the most pressing issue that day. But many other things that also have to be handled really never get any attention,” Dr. Soeren Mattke, a senior scientist at RAND Corporation, a nonprofit research organization told U.S. News.
