Don’t Miss These Medicare Deadlines
Missing Medicare deadlines can cost you hundreds of dollars in higher insurance premiums.
Most Americans become eligible for Medicare at or around 65. If you miss the Medicare enrollment period during initial enrollment, you could be charged higher premiums for the rest of your life. That can result in thousands of dollars wasted on avoidable Medicare insurance premiums.
Follow this Medicare parts guide to avoid late enrollment:
Medicare parts A & B
If you are retired and receiving social security benefits you are automatically enrolled in Medicare parts A and B. Coverage begins the month you turn 65. However, if you are a retiree and have yet to claim Social Security benefits, you will need to take action by signing up for Medicare. You can sign up for Medicare Part A hospital insurance and Medicare Part B medical insurance ten months before your birth month. For example, if you turn 65 in December, the first month you can sign up for Medicare is February. You can sign up any time prior to three months before your birth month. Coverage can start as early as the first day of the month you turn 65, or the first day of the prior month if you are born on the first of the month. Medicare Advantage Plans have a similar initial enrollment period.
If you miss the initial enrollment period for Medicare, you can sign up again between January 1st and March 31st each year for coverage that would begin on the first of July. However, if you wait to sign up after the initial Medicare enrollment period you could be charged a late enrollment penalty once your benefits start. Monthly Part B premiums for example, increase by 10% for every 12 month period you delay signing up for Medicare. The goal is to prevent recipients from waiting to sign up for Medicare until they have health issues.
If you are not retired, and still working for an employer who provides health insurance, you would need to enroll in Medicare within eight months of leaving your job, or when the health care coverage ends.
Medicare Part D
You can enroll for Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage during the same seven-month period around your 65th birthday. However, if you go 63 or more days without prescription drug coverage after becoming eligible for Medicare you can acquire a penalty. The penalty is calculated by taking 1% of the “national base beneficiary premium”, which is currently $34.10, and multiplying it by the number of months you’ve gone without prescription drug coverage after becoming eligible. They also round to the nearest 10 cents. This penalty is added to your Medicare Part D plan charges each year. As the national base beneficiary premium increases, so does your penalty. Basically, don’t miss this deadline or it will cost you.
Medigap Plans
If you are looking into Medigap policies, or private supplemental insurance plans, you can begin to enroll six months after you qualify and have enrolled in Medicare Part B. Medigap plans help patients pay for some of Medicare’s cost-sharing requirements, and some services traditional Medicare doesn’t cover.
If you miss this enrollment period, insurance companies are able to use medical underwriting to decide how much to charge you for your policy, and can reject patients they don’t want to cover due to pre-existing conditions or other reasons. Missing the enrollment period could cost you Medigap coverage or significantly higher rates if you have any health conditions.
