Medicare Advantage is Changing in 2016 – Are you Ready?
Take a closer look at Medicare Advantage and see how it compares to traditional Medicare
Did you know there’s an alternative to traditional Medicare? It’s called Medicare Advantage and it’s changing this year.
Medicare Advantage plans are also known as Part C plans. They involve private insurers that offer health maintenance organization or preferred provider organization models for those eligible for Medicare. As Medicare Advantage plans become more popular it’s important for seniors to keep updated on changes and updates to the health care plan.
Medicare Advantage Plan Choices
According to a study released by the Kaiser Family Foundation, there were several key changes to the Medicare alternative. Medicare Advantage plans are customized based on specific location, that means that customers only have access to a sample of the total number of available plans. According to the Kaiser study, the number of available plans will rise by 3% nationwide. On average, Americans living in metropolitan areas will have about 19 plans to choose from , those outside of these areas will have approximately 11 choices.
Part D Premiums Will Increase
The average monthly premium for Medicare Advantage plan dropped slightly in 2016, but of the decline came from unpopular PPO plans that have high costs and lower enrollment. HMO premiums will rise about 9% or $31, while local PPO premiums are slated to increase 8% to $68.
Out-of-Pocket Limits to Increase
Medicare Advantage plans set a maximum for out-of-pocket expenses on hospital and medical services. The maximum is $6,700 for 2016, but many plans offer lower maximums. However, the number of plans with lower out-of-pocket maximums has decreased over recent years.
Only 23% of plans will charge $3,400 or less in out-of-pocket maximums which is down from 30% last year. PPO plans have dramatically increased out-of-pocket maximums over the past five years.
Prescription Drug Deductibles are on the Rise
In 2010, 90% of Medicare Advantage plans had $0 deductibles on prescription drug coverage, but that number fell to just 55% in 2016. The maximum deductible is $360, which 16% of plans charge. The average deductible is $118, which is up from $28 from 2015.
