Open Enrollment 2023 FAQ
Medicare Open Enrollment 2023 is from October 15th through December 7th. During this time period, you can join, switch, or drop a Medicare plan. Your coverage will begin on January 1st 2023. If you are looking for a Medicare Advantage plan, open enrollment is from January 1st – March 31st. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan you can switch to another Medicare Advantage plan or change to Original Medicare. You can also join a separate Medicare drug plan at this time.
What is a Medicare health plan?
Generally, a Medicare health plan is offered by a private company. It contracts with Medicare to provide Medicare Part A, that provides hospital insurance and Medicare Part B that provides medical insurance benefits. Medicare health plans include Medicare Advantage Plans and other Medicare health plans.
What can I do if I’m newly eligible for Medicare?
If you recently turned 65, you are newly eligible for Medicare. You can sign up for Medicare Advantage or a Medicare drug plan during the 7-month period that starts 3 months before the month of your 65th birthday including your birthday month and ends 3 months after the month you turn 65.
When can I make changes to my Medicare Advantage plan or Medicare drug coverage?
During certain times a year you can make changes to your Medicare Advantage or Medicare drug coverage for the following year. During open enrollment for Medicare Advantage and Medicare drug coverage (October 15 – December 7) you can change from original Medicare to Medicare Advantage. You can change from a Medicare Advantage plan back to an Original Medicare plan. You can switch from one type of Medicare Advantage plan to another. You can switch to a Medicare Advantage Plan that offers drug coverage. You can also do the opposite, switch from a plan with drug coverage to one that does not. You can join a Medicare drug plan during this time and also drop Medicare drug coverage all together.
