Retirement Benefits Set to Change in 2015
Those saving for retirement will have two additional options when it comes to savings in 2016. In other news, Social Security claiming options for married couples will decrease, and Medicare beneficiaries will see a premium increase.
Say hello to myRA
The myRA is a new type of Roth retirement account that comes with no fees and a guarantee from the government that it will never lose value. Investors will have only one option, a Treasury savings bond with a variable interest rate that has averaged 3.19% over the past 10 years. Bond interest is not taxed while in the account and won’t be taxed at all if you leave it in the account until after the age of 59.5.
Those who earn less than $131,000 or couples who earn up to $193,000 are eligible to contribute up to $5,500 per year, or $6,500 if they are 50 or older. Once the balance hits $15,000 or the account turns 30, the money is transferred to a private sector Roth IRA. According to U.S. Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew, “MyRA is designed to remove common barriers to saving and give people an easy way to get started.” There are multiple ways to contribute to your myRA account. You can set up direct deposit via your employer, set up a checking or savings account or direct a portion of your tax refund to the account.
Social Security can only be claimed once
In some cases married individuals over the age of 66 have claimed social security benefits twice. The collect spousal payments first and then later switch to payments based on their work contributions. The collector will then secure higher payments due to collecting at an older age. With the new rules, those who turn 62 in 2016 will not be able to claim both types of payments. “If you are 63 years old today, you will still have the option of doing this at age 66,” says Tim Steffen, a certified financial planner and director of financial planning at Robert W. Baird & Co. “For anybody who is not 62 by the end of 2015, the option of a restricted application is going away.”
Higher saver’s credit threshold
One piece of good news is that it will be easier to qualify for the saver’s credit in 2016. In 2015 the adjusted gross income limit to claim the saver’s credit was $30,500. It will increase $250 in 2016 to $30,750 for individuals and by $500 to $61,500 for married couples. “The Saver’s Credit is a tax credit above and beyond the average of tax-deferred savings when contributing to a 401(k), 403(b) or IRA,” said Catherine Collinson, president of the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies. This is a valuable tax credit for low and moderate-income retirement savers.
